Fans clamoring for more of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi should be pleased to hear that the actor wants more of the role as well. At the ceremony celebrating the actor getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he expressed excitement at the idea of returning to the character for more Star Wars projects. In other words, when it comes to getting more of the beloved character, the ball is in Disney’s court.
On the subject of returning to his iconic role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor said to Variety, “I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”
Ewan McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy, and it has become his best-known role. First, taking the role over from Alec Guinness in the divisive Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, he played the character through all three prequel films. His performance in those films is often praised even by critics of the trilogy as a whole.
Hayden Christensen, who presented Ewan McGregor with his Hollywood Walk of Fame star, supported his former co-star’s call for more Obi-Wan stories. The two worked together on Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith as well as the 2022 Disney+ series. Christensen praised the older actor for his talent and expressed his interest in seeing more of him in the Star Wars universe.
While Obi-Wan Kenobi was planned as a mini-series, its success and Ewan McGregor’s interest in doing more could easily result in a second season. The series was well-received by critics and less divisive among fans than most modern Star Wars projects, earning an 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Another season or even a standalone movie for the character could help Disney salvage the franchise, which has been incredibly uneven in the Disney era.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is his most commercially successful role, but Ewan McGregor has established himself as a talented actor in both film and TV with great range. In addition to Star Wars, he’s appeared in dozens of movies across numerous genres, including Big Fish, Moulin Rouge, Black Hawk Down, I Love You Phillip Moris, Doctor Sleep, and Birds of Prey. He’s also found success on the small screen, appearing in shows like Fargo, Halston, and A Gentleman in Moscow.
Getting his star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame is just the latest accolade for the celebrated Obi-Wan actor. Ewan McGregor won a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination for his dual role as twin brothers in Fargo. He later won an Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy for his starring role in Halston.
Ewan McGregor has proven he’s a phenomenal actor with decades of great performances, and Disney would be foolish to waste such a talented actor who’s excited to continue playing his most popular character for them. Many fans have been disappointed with Disney’s handling of the Star Wars franchise, but Obi-Wan Kenobi remains a popular character with enough goodwill to build around. With the actor publicly announcing his desire to return, it’s on Disney not to squander that opportunity.
